When I was designing this site, I spent a while finding photos that would potentially work as banners, with an unusual 3:1, 4:1 or even wider/shorter aspect ratio. Some of them, I’ve turned the contrast down or made other edits to make them stand out less, or to accommodate text potentially going in front of them.
